Health Science

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries in the U.S.  Upon successful completion of the Health Science program at DCCTC, students have the opportunity to take the CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) exam and earn their first nationally recognized accreditation. This advanced knowledge and certification offer a great advantage for students who wish to go directly into the workplace or pursue further education in the healthcare field.

Students have the opportunity to participate in numerous community-based service projects and learning experiences.  Through the HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) student organization, they are able to participate in the state leadership conference, various competitions and apply for scholarships.

Health Science is one of our most popular programs.  This course is offered at our main campus.

Health Science I

Credits:  2
Prerequisite:  None
Site:  DCCTC / Trolley Road / Woodland HS
Students gain entry-level knowledge and skills to enter the health care field. Content includes anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, health systems, health science career research, health & wellness, legal & ethical practices protective measures for workers and patients, medical communication skills, nutrition, growth and development and medical math. To be eligible to enroll in Health Science II, students must satisfactorily pass all modules in Health Science I.

Health Science II

Credits:  2     
Prerequisites:  Health Science I
Site:  DCCTC / Trolley Road / Woodland HS

Level II health science students will select to focus on an area of study and gain intensive “hands on” field experience.  Areas of study include, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Veterinary Technology, Dental Assistant and Patient Data Collection. Students are required to participate in a 40-hour internship at a local healthcare facility. Technical skills mastered and certifications awarded will afford students an advantage when applying for employment or admission to college.

Health Science III

Credits: 1
Prerequisites: Health Science I & II
Site:  DCCTC / Trolley Road / Woodland HS

Health Science III is a work-based learning class for students who have successfully completed Health Science I & II. This course allows students to gain valuable work experience as well as high school credit.  Students must be recommended by their instructor and provide their own transportation.


Leah Owens, RN

“I love inspiring young people to follow their dreams in the medical field. I also enjoy the family-like atmosphere at the school.”

Mrs. Owens has worked at DCCTC for five years.  She is a graduate of Midlands Technical College with an Associate Degree in Nursing.  She has worked at Trident Medical Center on the step-down neuro unit with the majority of her time spent in the operating room as a member of the cardiovascular team.  She also worked in the Ambulatory Care Center prepping patients for procedures and surgery. Additionally, she worked in Quality Assurance / Wound Care at the St. George Nursing Home. Mrs. Owens is a Licensed CPR Instructor and the HOSA Advisor at the school.

Wendy Mims, RN

“I really love watching the students grow in knowledge and practice in the most gratifying career ever!”

Wendy Mims has been a Registered Nurse for more than 35 years.  After leaving the hospital system, she worked for 23 years for SC DHEC as a Home Health Nurse Case Manager for Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties.

Kim Reeves, RN, BSN

“I enjoy sharing my experience and knowledge with future leaders in healthcare. I want to see everyone who has an interest in healthcare make a difference in someone’s life.”

Mrs. Reeves has worked at DCCTC for four years.  She holds a degree in nursing from The Medical University of South Carolina and she worked as an RN for Roper Hospital in Cardiovascular and Critical Care for 16 years.

Melissa Tice, RN

“I enjoy working with students because they keep me thinking as well and they are excited about learning.”

Melissa Tice comes to DCCTC from Trident Hospital where she still works on an “as needed basis” in Labor and Delivery.  She received her ADN from Trident Technical College and her BSN from Charleston Southern University.  She is currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Nursing-Nurse Educator program at Charleston Southern.

Erin Peters, RN, BSN

“I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experiences of the healthcare field with the students as they are the future of healthcare.”

Mrs. Peters comes to DCCTC from Roper Home Health where she still works on an “as needed basis”.  She received her BSN from MUSC.  Her prior work experience includes, nurse case manager for Roper Home Health and Post-surgical/ICU step down unit at Roper Hospital.
